Day 31: NYC Sights, Central Park, The MET, A Storm, Carmine's, Anastasia
So thankful for public transportation! There was a bus stop into NYC that took us through the Lincoln tunnel. I am NOT a fan of the tunnel, but it's one of the quickest ways to get over. It was a warm, humid day, but there were scattered clouds. Every time a cloud would pass, the temperature dropped a bunch. We made a quick stop at Starbucks for tea/coffee/treat and started our long walk. Our goal was to end up at The Met. We have had a bit of a fascination with The MET after reading "From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankenweiler."
Radio City Music Hall and Rockefeller Center. There were SO many police officers at Rockefeller Center.
St. Patrick's Cathedral. The interior was absolutely gorgeous. It was also wonderful to step inside and have a bit of air conditioning!
Walking down 5th Avenue you see many famous places! Trump Tower and Tiffany and Co. are right next to each other.
We finally reached Central Park! The boys were excited to find this little pond and the boats. Unfortunately, they were all rented out by a school group. One girl was so kind though and shared her boat with the boys! It made their day and bought us a few more minutes of good attitudes to reach the MET.
The Metropolitan Museum of Art. This building and the art collections were amazing. You could easily spend weeks here looking at the exhibits. We chose a few halls to go through. Bekah really wanted to see the Renaissance Hall and the boys were excited to see the armor and weapons hall.
So fun to see paintings by El Grecco since we have studied him.
Five minutes. Five minutes would have made the difference between staying in the MET till the storm passed, or us being all completely drenched running to take cover under bridges in Central Park. It would have made a difference between what the kids will remember too! As we left the MET to make it to an early dinner reservation at Carmine's, we were met with this sky. In theory, we should have turned back, but we thought we could outrun the storm and make it through Central Park to the subway. We didn't. We ended up running from bridge to bridge. We ended up drenched (everything except the camera thankfully!) We ended up with a fun, unforgettable memory! We were additionally soaked by the cars driving by spraying us!
Drenched on the subway.
Later tonight we'll be here for my birthday show!!
We had a yummy Italian family style dinner at Carmine's. Thankfully, they held our reservation despite our being late because of a rain delay. We also came in soaking wet! After dinner, we needed to pick up a few things so that we wouldn't be soaked. Thankful for cheap flip flops so we didn't have to wear wet shoes anymore! Bekah also loved her new (dry) dress!
Time Square!
Finally, after waiting for months, my mom, Bekah, and I got to see a Broadway show! We loved Anastasia! It was the perfect birthday present this year, and SO much fun to share after a crazy day! Chris was SO wonderful and picked us up after the show so that we didn't have to figure out buses back to New Jersey late at night.
What a day! One none of us will every forget! Central Park, the Met, the rain, drenched to the bones, yummy food at Carmines and Anastasia! I wouldn't trade one moment. So much fun making crazy good memories with our family!
