Day 19: Mt. Washington
The Blueberry Muffin for breakfast!
Mt. Washington is no joke! The eight-mile journey to the top is one of the most treacherous roads! Technically, it was one of the safest statistically, however, it was an insane ride up the mountain. You are supposed to drive in first gear all the way up, and you have to drive in first all the way down. Bekah and I were terrified on the way up, and pretty much on the way down too. The last four miles is basically dropping off cliffs. Although the summit is only a bit over 6,000 ft, because of its location, it has the most extreme weather in the United States, with it averaging hurricane force winds 100 days a year. Today almost broke the hottest day on record, reaching 71. The record is 72. Winds were actually very mild today, which I was thankful for!
The tower behind where the kids are standing is part of a weather observatory. The meteorologists who work there have a club. If you can walk around that platform when the winds are at a sustained force of over 100 miles per hour, you get to join. No thanks. I'd be afraid of being blown off the cliff that's on the other side of that rail! There are only about 30 who have made it, and the meteorologist that we talked to has tried seven times, but not made it yet.
Mt. Washington is the peak in the back. Can't tell you how thankful we were to survive the ride down!
I am so grateful that you made it up safely and down again!!! That is a mountain road that I can appreciate forever through your photos...I don't think I will ever have the nerve to drive that road!
