Here We Go!

We're packing up to head cross country for the summer!  We are super excited for this opportunity and hope that you enjoy sharing it with us along the way!  My goal is to print this out for my family in a book when we get home, so I'm hoping to share fun memories and what was important to us along our journey.

Day 20: Vermont! Montpelier, Ben & Jerry's, Morse Farm Maple Sugar

  We had a thunderstorm this morning, followed by a beautiful warm, then cold day!  We headed to Montpelier, Vermont amidst a beautiful sky of clouds.  The Vermont State House was beautiful.  After it burned down in the 1850s, it was rebuilt using the original portico because that had survived.  If you look closely at the front columns though, You can see a darkened area, which is where they were burned.  They are currently redoing the gold leafing at the top and have commissioned a new statue for the top.  Because of the weight of granite and marble, the statue at the top is hand carved out of wood.  The last time it was replaced was over 80 years ago.  One thing that I have noticed is how proud the citizens of New Hampshire and Vermont are of their state.   This cannon was aboard a ship during the Spanish-American War.   After the fire, they sought to use materials that would be less likely to burn.  This stai...

Day 31: NYC Sights, Central Park, The MET, A Storm, Carmine's, Anastasia

  So thankful for public transportation!  There was a bus stop into NYC that took us through the Lincoln tunnel.  I am NOT a fan of the tunnel, but it's one of the quickest ways to get over.  It was a warm, humid day, but there were scattered clouds.  Every time a cloud would pass, the temperature dropped a bunch.  We made a quick stop at Starbucks for tea/coffee/treat and started our long walk.  Our goal was to end up at The Met.  We have had a bit of a fascination with The MET after reading "From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankenweiler."   Radio City Music Hall and Rockefeller Center.  There were SO many police officers at Rockefeller Center.   St. Patrick's Cathedral.  The interior was absolutely gorgeous.  It was also wonderful to step inside and have a bit of air conditioning!   Walking down 5th Avenue you see many famous places!  Trump Tower and Tiffany and Co. are...

Day 26: The Freedom Trail

  Today was less than ideal.  I had grand plans, but this should have been my first clue.  Joey is having a tough time.  He's ready to just be able to play, and today he was really feeling it.  The goal today was to do the Freedom Trail,  the Boston State House, the Make Way for Ducklings Statue, and the Swan Boat.  We just made the Freedom Trail.  We decided to go with a guide.  Typically, we have found that having a guide for things such as historic buildings is far more engaging for the kids and we all learn much more.  Although today's guide was great, we may have been better off going on our own for this because it would have been quicker.   Paul Revere's grave in the Granary burial site.  Apparently in several decades ago the groundsmen decided it would be easier to mow the lawn if the headstones were in rows.  So, they rearranged the headstones, but not the bodies.  There are over 4,000 people ...
