Day 8: Church in Roscoe then on to Dexter, MI


 Heading out of Roscoe we were able to go to church with the Timotis and Klinks.  It was wonderful to be able to worship with friends while on vacation.

 And then on to Michigan! SO excited to spend time with family!  I love that our kids get to spend time with their extended family and make memories like we did as children.

Day 20: Vermont! Montpelier, Ben & Jerry's, Morse Farm Maple Sugar

  We had a thunderstorm this morning, followed by a beautiful warm, then cold day!  We headed to Montpelier, Vermont amidst a beautiful sky of clouds.  The Vermont State House was beautiful.  After it burned down in the 1850s, it was rebuilt using the original portico because that had survived.  If you look closely at the front columns though, You can see a darkened area, which is where they were burned.  They are currently redoing the gold leafing at the top and have commissioned a new statue for the top.  Because of the weight of granite and marble, the statue at the top is hand carved out of wood.  The last time it was replaced was over 80 years ago.  One thing that I have noticed is how proud the citizens of New Hampshire and Vermont are of their state.   This cannon was aboard a ship during the Spanish-American War.   After the fire, they sought to use materials that would be less likely to burn.  This stai...

Day 13: Fort Niagara and Niagara Falls

Our goal in coming to Buffalo was to be able to spend the day touring Fort Niagara and Niagara Falls.  It ended up being a bit farther than it seemed, but we still loved our Air BnB.  The host was amazing and left us with a graciously stocked kitchen!  On our way to Fort Niagara, we had our first major snag of the trip, a ticket.  We were totally shocked when we got pulled over.  We were ticketed for not moving to the far left lane when we passed a police car that was on the shoulder (giving someone else a ticket).  Apparently, this is law across much of the east coast (and Canada).  The law states that you must move to a lane not next to any kind of emergency or construction vehicle when possible.  They have a zero-tolerance policy, so no grace for not being aware of the law.  Today we planned to go to Fort Ticonderoga specifically because they had a living history event representing the French and Indian War.  This fort has seen so...

Day 40: Archives, Ford's Theater, White House, Smithsonian Museum of American History, The National Mall at Night

  We were so thankful to be able to stay with our friends, the Parals in Fairfax, VA.  Kristen and I grew up together and it was a blast getting to reconnect.  Our kids had an amazing time together too, so it was so hard to say goodbye!     We started the day at the National Archives where we saw originals of the Declaration of Independence, The Constitution, and The Bill of Rights.  It was incredible.  Bummer was, no pictures allowed!  After the archives, we walked to Ford's Theater.  Learning and seeing Lincoln sites has been a surreal experience.  I keep mulling over in my mind how our nation would have been different if Lincoln had survived and his goal for after the war, had been achieved.  The picture on the right is the home where Lincoln died, after being shot at Ford's Theater across the street.   John Wilkes Booth's gun and the theater box where President Lincoln and his wife sat.  ...
