Day 11: Papa's Old Neighborhood, Henry Ford Museum, Shawarmas, and Tiger Game
Today was a stormy day for most of the day. We were headed in to Detroit for a Tiger's game in the evening, so we decided to head to see where my dad's side of the family grew up in Taylor. The house was in great shape and the current owner was happy to tell us all about the updates he has made.
My dad's elementary school was turned in to a canine training facility since the last time I was here about 20 years ago. I got out to take a picture and at first they were not happy about it. I explained what I was doing (just taking a picture of my dad's old school) and then they allowed a photo, but I had to be careful to not include any police officers.
We then visited the Henry Ford Museum. There were so many amazing things to see. This engine was massive, one of the largest I think I have ever stood next to.
This museum is filled with many artifacts of significance. Above is the actual chair that Lincoln was sitting in when he was shot at Ford's Theater. Below, Bekah and Carly are sitting in the exact bench where Rosa Parks made her famous stand. This is the ACTUAL bus! That just amazed me. I
When you're five the days can be long. Mandy and I look over and saw his choice of seat and had to laugh, and take a picture.
Next up, Bucharest Grill. The food was delicious! Thanks Austin!
I am eating a shawarma as big as my head!
Walking to the Tiger game we saw this interesting facade. The game was a blast, even though they lost. It was just fun to have everyone together!
Looks like you had a great time! Dad thought his home looked better than when they lived there, and the multipurpose room at the K-9 (school) facility too! I can't remember if we ever went to the Ford Museum or just to his home which also is a museum and hold a lot of historical pieces. Glad you are having such a great experience!
ReplyDeleteThe Gilbert's have a running joke that "The Tigers are supposed to be good this year"😉 Not suprised they lost. Glad you got to visit all the interesting sites in Detroit! I can't get over that bus either!!
