Day 46: Williamsburg

Today we headed to Williamsburg.  After some delays, including another bloody knee for Joey, we made it to the Governor's mansion.  It was another muggy day, but I was thankful for the clouds and the rain that stayed at bay.  This was a day of seeming misses.  We have tried to do a few things along the way to appease the heart of Joey, who isn't completely inclined towards day after day of historic touring.  He got to ride a sea glass carousel in New York City, and that was one of his high lights.  Williamsburg had ox cart rides.  We were going to try and let him do that, but totally missed that it ended at noon.  He was so disappointed, but the world moves on.
One of the kids favorite things at the mansion was the maze in the garden.  It drove me nuts.  I DON'T like the feeling of being trapped!
They wanted to hang out here.
The boys were super excited to see the armory.

We watched to firing of the noon time cannon.
Joey won for being engaged and asking questions at the shops.  We visited the shoe shop, the wood working shop, and the clothing shop, before heading to a theatrical demonstration where the kids got to be involved.

The bricks.  We should have started here first!  The kids would have spent all day in the brick making pit.  As it was, we did a quick turn so that we could make it back to the courthouse so we could see a courtroom demonstration.  Chris was picked to be on the jury and Bekah got to be part of a "case" where she was securing confirmation to become an apprentice in a dress maker shop.

 Courthouse
 Capitol building.
Piece of significant history: the speakers chair...has survived since around 1730 and has seen so much history!
A fife and drum corps closed out the day.  We were worried the rain would come and they would cancel it, but the rain help off!  Then we bolted for the bus to avoid the rain, but the wait was too long, so we ran back to the car.
At one of the gift shops an employee recommended the Cook Out as a cheapish place to eat.  The kids loved it.  I was confused.  Clearly their ideas of "sides" are not the same as mine.  But, the kids were full, and we all had plenty of fried food.  We stopped by the Virginia War Memorial on our way back.  It is another beautifully done memorial.  We wish we would have spent more time actually IN Richmond, rather than just using it as a base point!
